EAST AFRICA Medical Missions & Outreaches Program

This program aims to bridge critical resource gaps in underserved East African hospitals and medical clinics while offering international healthcare students and professionals immersive clinical experience operating across primary locations in three (3) main countries: Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. The program integrates hospital-based care with rural public health outreach. Participants work alongside local medical staff to navigate healthcare delivery in resource-limited settings, fostering reciprocal learning and cultural exchange. Volunteers are paired with local mentors & they support local medical staff, treat common conditions like malaria and respiratory infections, and deliver health education among other healthcare activities including assisting with triage, wound care, HIV counseling, immunization drives, and mobile health camps.

Medical Internships and Electives in Africa
African Medical Samaritans International Network (AMSIN)’s Internship Program provides upper-level undergraduate and graduate-level college students the opportunity to learn about global healthcare and the non-profit sector while gaining hands-on experience at program sites. Interns develop both professionally and personally as they contribute to the organization mission. Outside of the intern’s departmental project, training and event opportunities include: Global Healthcare Discussions, Staff Interviews & Job Shadowing Opportunities, Networking Opportunities among others.
Group Volunteering for medical travellers on community missions
African Medical Samaritans International Network (AMSIN) offers fun, engaging volunteer opportunities for groups of 5 to 150 people from Corporations, churches, civic clubs, universities, and more that share the mission to deliver health & hope to communities. The interactive experience is designed to build teams, accomplish meaningful goals, and have fun while impacting communities.
Please Note:
- Foreign medical personnel who join our program will operate under the supervision or in direct partnership with our local host & licensed medical professionals who understand regional disease profiles.
- Foreign medical personnel who strictly perform non-medical tasks (such as crowd control, data entry, logistics, or general administration) do not legally require a clinical practicing license, but engaging in any clinical observation or assistance during a medical camp means they must acquire a temporary license.
- Foreign medical personnel who intend to engage in clinical practice must register or obtain temporary practicing licenses from the medical and dental council like Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council.
Volunteer Requirements & Eligibility
To ensure patient safety and ethical medical practices, all participants must fulfill the following criteria:
Age: Minimum 18 years old at the start of the program.
Credentials: Proof of medical/nursing enrollment or copies of active professional healthcare licenses.
Personal Gear: Volunteers must supply their own medical scrubs, a laboratory coat, closed-toe protective shoes, and a stethoscope.
Travel Documents: A passport valid for at least 6 months past the departure date, mandatory comprehensive travel insurance, and required regional vaccinations (e.g., Yellow Fever).
VISAS: This program requires you to apply for an East African Tourist Visa that provides you entry in 3 countries of Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda.
Program Locations & Placements
In each of the following countries, volunteers will be placed in our host community Hospitals or medical centers where they will operate under the supervision or in direct partnership with our local host & licensed medical professionals who understand regional disease profiles. Volunteers will live and stay at our community host families or at our volunteer housing residence especially for volunteers participating in relatively large groups.

Program fees for groups will be discussed upon confirmation by groups.
The program fees above will be your humble contribution to the organization as well as ensuring that your stay with us is meaningful and enjoyable. The program fees will contribute to:

- Airport pick-up from Entebbe International Airport
- Contribution to meals and accommodation
- Certificate of completion & organization T-shirt
- Donation to Children's Ward under construction in the community.
- Inland support where necessary

Airport Pickup from Entebbe International Airport
For this EAST AFRICA Medical Missions & Outreaches program, the country of entry will be Uganda and the primary airport will be Entebbe International Airport. For safety and comfort of our volunteers, we recommend that volunteers travel with the drivers who already know the dynamics of the journey and know the destinations very well. We have partnered with a local transport company which provides all travel needs of our volunteers from the Airport to work stations and residences in Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. Our local staff is always available to help coordinate the transportation with the volunteers.
On Arrival at the Airport:
The volunteers will be picked from the airport & taken to the Hotel in Kampala where volunteers will rest for a night before travelling to Eastern Uganda the following day. You can take a guided walk tour around Kampala City and do some extra shopping where necessary guided and supported by our staff.
On the following day, the Volunteers will be driven to Butaleja district in Eastern Uganda to their place of residence and work station.
On arrival in Butaleja District Eastern Uganda
- While in Butaleja district, you will spend 1 day getting oriented at your place of residence where you will be staying throughout your volunteer placement. The orientation is about meals, Housing etc.
- You will spend another 1 day at our community office getting oriented on the entire program and you will visit and meet the hospital/clinic staff for further orientation.
- On the following day you will be expected to report to work and start working from Monday to Friday except for medical outreaches, you will be guided by your supervisors and team mates.
- On weekends it’s recommended to relax, play and enjoy the culture around the community. You can arrange with the local volunteers for a tour, adventure, and attend local functions, parties among others.
Travel and Work between Countries (Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda)
After the volunteers’ placement period and community work in Uganda, the volunteers will travel by road transport (bus) where necessary accompanied by our local staff to the next destination/location in Kenya or Rwanda depending on the itinerary. In Kenya or Rwanda, the volunteers will meet with the local staff and will be led to the host family where the volunteer will reside/stay/live during the period of placement. The volunteers will later report to the hospital/clinic to meet with the medical team for orientation and community work during program placement. After the program placement period in each country, the volunteer will exit through either Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi City in Kenya, or Kigali International Airport in Kigali City in Rwanda.
Accommodation
For a better experience of an African village with comfort, all our Volunteers are accommodated in our local host family homes in Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda where they live with other family members & volunteers become part of the family. Volunteers will also live and stay at the volunteer camp dormitories especially for volunteers participating in relatively large groups. We have permanent houses with electricity, the pit latrines and bathrooms constructed outside the main houses. Each volunteer is allocated a room, bed and mattress but most times volunteers share rooms with other volunteers or if they come in groups or family etc. Volunteers are encouraged to carry their personal bed-sheets, Bed covers/blanket, pillow, bathing Towel and other personal items. Volunteers are also free to come with camping tents to be used in cases for community medical missions and outreaches where necessary.
Food & Beverages
While at the residences, the volunteers will share local food with the host family members where the volunteer may participate in preparing, cooking and serving local foods especially during free time and weekends. We provide three (3) main meals i.e Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner and Local foods like Posho, millet, Rice, Matoke (bananas), sweet potatoes among others will be the main food during your stay however, once in a while we will have modern dishes although we encourage volunteers to try to get used to local foods as much as possible to enable them have a better experience of African meals. Volunteers will share Local meals with other staff at the office and or hospitals/medical clinics.
Typical working days
- You will work from Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:30pm although sometimes it depends on what needs to be accomplished.
- The day starts with breakfast at your place of residence between 7:30am to 8:30am.
- Staff meeting at 9:00am to review the tasks at hand including following up on the unfinished ones and planning for the week.
- Everyone goes to their work station to handle needed tasks.
- At 4:30pm work ends but you must be flexible depending on the tasks at hand.
- Flexibility is very important at this level depending on circumstances.
Mode of Transport
The quickest mode of transport in East Africa is by use of motorbikes which will mostly be used to move from the accommodation (residence) to work station and vice versa. In Nairobi Kenya and Kigali Rwanda you can also use Uber.
Free-time activities
After work, volunteers are encouraged to do some sports, visit down town among. Our staff will help the volunteers’ book activities according to their choices. Over the weekends there are social events like the transitional dance exhibitions, community Films and walks. Volunteers can also choose to visit the beach, hiking among others. Feel free to ask what you would like to do and we will work towards fixing it. Volunteers will participate in Sports activities in the community and will visit Amphitheatre to watch traditional Dance.

Despite being one of the beautiful countries in the world, most communities in Uganda are still facing a shortage of healthcare professionals and other resources. This program focuses on providing primary healthcare that covers a range of prevention, wellness, diagnosis, and treatment for common illnesses in communities. As a medical volunteer in Uganda, you will have the opportunity to work & support our community medical missions/outreaches and get placed to work in local medical center, public hospitals and medical clinics providing critical medical support to vulnerable populations. Your tasks may include performing outpatient procedures, conducting blood tests, engaging in community outreach, assisting with family planning, treating minor injuries, and offering antenatal care, contributing to vital healthcare services in rural communities. We also welcome volunteers who can support with in-kind donations of hospital equipment’s and other in-kind support items.

We have partnered with local transport company which provides all travel needs of our volunteers from the Airport to Eastern Uganda at the residence and Work station. If volunteers wish to travel with our recommended partner travel agency, the volunteers will PAY all the costs involved through the process of travel, from airport pick-up to the project site and back to the airport on return. This will be agreed upon between the volunteers and the organization after the volunteer confirms program placement with the organization.

Accommodation in Butaleja
For a better experience of an African village with comfort, all our Volunteers are accommodated in our local community home where they live with other family members & volunteers become part of the family. There is a wide, green compound with a number of fruit trees like oranges, mangoes, papaws, jack fruit, avocados among others.
Mode of Transport
The quickest mode of transport in Butaleja is use of motorbikes and the hospitals or Clinics are located about, 15-20 minutes away by motorbike from the accommodation (residence) place.
